Fisheries management draws on fisheries science in order to find ways to protect fishery resources so sustainable exploitation is possible. Modern fisheries management is often referred to as a governmental system of appropriate management rules based on defined objectives and a mix of management means to implement the rules, which are put in place by a system of monitoring control and surveillance. Effective management is essential if marine resources are to be utilized in a sustainable and a responsible manner. Sustainable and responsible fisheries management is of a fundamental importance as fisheries are one of the main pillars of the economy through ecologically and economically sustainable management of the living marine resources. Fish and fisheries are an integral part of most societies and make important contributions to economic and social health and well-being in many countries and areas. There are many reasons for this unacceptable state of affairs, but the primary reasons all come down to a failure in fisheries governance in most countries. The responsibility for declining stocks and falling economic returns and employment opportunities in fisheries must be shared amongst fishers, fisheries management authorities, fishery scientists and those involved in environmental degradation. Not all of the underlying problems lie within the realm of fisheries management, but the fisheries manager is the person who is most often in the best position to observe and record what is happening in the fisheries under his or her jurisdiction, to establish the underlying cause or causes of any problems, to rectify those within their jurisdiction, and to bring the others to the attention of both the interested parties in fisheries and those with a responsibility covering the external causes. However, all too often the fisheries manager remains either unaware of the state of the resources, or fails to act sufficiently as the fisheries slip further and further into decay and crisis, or both. This is rarely, if ever, a deliberate choice and more often comes down to a lack of available information, an incomplete understanding of the nature of the task of fisheries management, and inadequate resources, structures and support to address the problems and utilize the resources in a planned and efficient manner. Fisheries have been explicitly managed in some places for hundreds of years. More than 80 percent of the worlds commercial exploitation of fish and shellfish are harvest from natural occurring populations in the oceans and freshwater areas. This monograph explores the possibilities for effective and sustainable fisheries management across the globe.

Botany is the scientific study of plants. Plants, means a wide range of living organisms from the smallest bacteria to the largest living things - the giant sequoia trees. Whether you call it botany, plant science or plant biology, it is one of the world's oldest natural sciences. By this definition plants include: algae, fungi, lichens, mosses, ferns, conifers and flowering plants. Today scientists believe bacteria, algae and fungi are in their own distinct kingdoms, but most general botany courses, and most Botany Departments at colleges and universities, still teach about these groups. Because the field is so broad, there are many kinds of plant biologists and many different opportunities available. Botanists interested in ecology study interactions of plants with other organisms and the environment. Other field botanists search to find new species or do experiments to discover how plants grow under different conditions. Some botanists study the structure of plants. They may work in the field, concentrating on the pattern of the whole plant. Others use microscopes to study the most detailed fine structure of individual cells. Many botanists do experiments to determine how plants convert simple chemical compounds into more complex chemicals. Plants are vital to all life on earth. They convert light from the sun into energy we can eat, and even use for fuel. They also release the oxygen we breathe. Botanists study plants to try to understand how these processes work. Their research is involved in enhancing crops, developing medicines, cleaning up contaminated sites, and even powering our cars. It's an exciting field on the cutting edge of the clean energy economy. It's also a profession for nature lovers. Botanists study processes that occur on a time scale ranging from fractions of a second in individual cells to those that unfold over eons of evolutionary time.

Aquaculture - Farming Aquatic Animals and Plants (Hardcover): Anjanette S. Tadena Aquaculture - Farming Aquatic Animals and Plants (Hardcover)

Aquaculture - also known as fish or shellfish farming - refers to the breeding, rearing, and harvesting of plants and animals in all types of water environments including ponds, rivers, lakes, and the ocean. Researchers and aquaculture producers are “farming” all kinds of freshwater and marine species of fish, shellfish, and plants. Aquaculture produces food fish, sport fish, bait fish, ornamental fish, crustaceans, mollusks, algae, sea vegetables, and fish eggs. Aquaculture includes the production of seafood from hatchery fish and shellfish which are grown to market size in ponds, tanks, cages, or raceways. Stock restoration or “enhancement” is a form of aquaculture in which hatchery fish and shellfish are released into the wild to rebuild wild populations or coastal habitats such as oyster reefs. Aquaculture also includes the production of ornamental fish for the aquarium trade, and growing plant species used in a range of food, pharmaceutical, nutritional, and biotechnology products. Aquaculture is a relatively new industry in the western world as it’s only been in the last 30-40 years that it has become a major industry. Since the 1970’s, global aquaculture production has been growing rapidly at a rate of about 9% per year. Today, aquaculture produces at least 50% of the world’s seafood and will likely continue to grow its production into the foreseeable future as the demand for fish protein increases and the ability of wild fish stocks to meet the demand continues to dwindle due to overfishing and insufficient regulation. In fact, aquaculture is now the fastest-growing form of food production on the planet. Aquaculture is often called the “Blue Revolution” and carries the mantra that if you farm fish instead of catching them then you will relieve the pressure on wild stocks. This is the natural progression in food production and follows the terrestrial model where humans stopped hunting animals and started farming them in order to create a reliable food supply. However, there are limitations to the ideals of the “Blue Revolution” because pressure on wild fish stocks is only relieved if the same people that are catching the fish start farming them instead and if the fish that you are producing don’t require more wild fish to produce. This introductory covers issues associated with sustainable aquaculture development, culture systems, hatchery methods, and nutrition management.
